FLAMES COURSE: METHOD IN DATA COLLECTION

April 22 – 24, 2015
09:30 – 16:00

KU Leuven, PSI Psychologisch Instituut, Tiensestraat 102, 3000 Leuven

The Free University of Brussels, Ghent University, Hasselt University, University of Antwerp and KU Leuven present the following course under the umbrella of FLAMES (Flanders Training Network for Methodology and Statistics).

This 3-day FLAMES course focuses on the basic aspects of metrology as a science, including a general theory of measurements, a theory of measurement error, principles for providing unified measurements, establishment of systems of units of measurement and the creation of corresponding standards, and the development of methods and means of measurement. This course offers an overview of topics regarding measurement, providing general guidelines for the operationalization of abstract concepts through the construction of indicators and the design of data collection instruments (e.g., questionnaires).

At the end of this course, participants are able to:

* Know about basic aspects of measurement (validity, reliability, precision, discriminating power, measurement scale).

* Understand the design and limitations of commonly used data collections methods (secondary data; primary data including observation, interviewing, and content analysis).

* Deal with problems that might occur in the data collection phase (non-response, reflexivity)

Anticipate on problems that might occur in the data analysis phase (analysis design, power considerations, missing data, confounders, extraneous variables).

The course is open to young researchers (especially PhD students and postdocs) from any field of research. Knowledge of general research methodology is recommended.
